Plus d’un million d’immigrants originaires d’Afrique résident officiellement en Italie, ainsi qu’un nombre inconnu de migrants sans papiers, dont beaucoup ont effectué un voyage périlleux et souvent mortel pour y parvenir. Alisa Martynova compare les migrants à des étoiles éparses, une constellation de jeunes gens de différents pays, de différents sexes et de différentes caractéristiques. Ils sont tous venus en Italie pour des raisons personnelles différentes et sont célébrés pour leurs histoires individuelles, d’une manière qui tente de résister aux stéréotypes des migrants africains. Le photographe les a interrogés sur leur maison et leurs souvenirs d’enfance, représentant leurs rêves par des métaphores et l’utilisation de couleurs. La plupart des traversées de migrants ont lieu la nuit, d’où la métaphore des étoiles, de la pluie et de l’obscurité.
Le projet s’est poursuivi sur la côte normande de la France à l’occasion du festival Planches Contact, où Martynova a travaillé avec des immigrés du Rwanda, du Congo, du Sénégal, du Nigeria, du Mali, de la Sierra Leone et de la Guinée. Certains des migrants qu’elle a rencontrés sont arrivés en Normandie il y a plus de dix ans, d’autres se sont installés il y a quelques années seulement, tous parlent au moins deux langues et trois ou quatre dialectes, certains rejettent leur culture d’origine, d’autres la chérissent au plus profond de leur cœur.

More than one million immigrants from Africa officially reside in Italy, as well as an unknown number of undocumented migrants, many of whom have made a perilous and often life-threatening journey to get there. Alisa Martynova compares migrants to scattered stars, a constellation of young people from different countries, of different genders, and with different traits. They have all come to Italy for different personal reasons and are celebrated for their individual stories, in a way that tries to resist stereotyping of African migrants. The photographer asked them about home and childhood memories, representing their dreams through metaphors and use of colour. Most migrant crossings occur at night, which leads to the metaphor of stars, rain and darkness.
The project was continued in the Normandy coast of France for Planches Contact festival, where Martynova worked with the immigrants from Rwanda, Congo, Senegal, Nigeria, Mali, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Some of the migrants she met came to Normandy more than 10 years ago, others have settled only a couple of years ago, everybody speaks at least two languages and three or four dialects, some of them reject their home culture, others treasure it close to their hearts.
ALISA MARTINOVA (née en 1994) est une photographe russe qui vit et travaille à Florence, en Italie. Après avoir terminé ses études de philologie étrangère en Russie, elle a obtenu un diplôme de photographie à la Fondazione Studio Marangoni de Florence, en Italie, en 2019. En 2020, Martynova a remporté le Zine Tonic book Award et a été nominée pour le Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award. En 2021, elle remporte avec son projet “Nowhere near” le 2e prix du World Press Photo, Portraits stories. La même année, son travail sera exposé lors de festivals tels que PhotoBrussels Festival 05, Giovane Fotografia Italiana et Planches Contact
ALISA MARTINOVA (b. 1994) is a Russian photographer who lives and works in Florence, Italy.
After finishing her studies in foreign philology in Russia, she graduated with a photography degree at the Fondazione Studio Marangoni in Florence, Italy, in 2019.
In 2020, Martynova won the Zine Tonic book Award and was nominated for the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award. In 2021, she won with her project “Nowhere near” the World Press Photo, Portraits stories, 2nd prize. In the same year her work will be exhibited during festivals including PhotoBrussels Festival 05, Giovane Fotografia Italiana, and Planches Contact.
