OUT OF FRAME
Round Table
Rome, Villa Altieri, Viale Manzoni 47
26 May 2023
from 10:30 to 13:00
Within the framework of the European research project on migration narratives BRIDGES: Assessing the production and impact of migration narratives (bridges-migration.eu), ZONA (zona.org) and FIERI (fieri.it) present the round table entitled Representing migrants beyond victimisation: a challenge for research, journalism, NGO communication and the visual professions, to be held on 26 May from 10:30 to 13:00 in the conference room of Villa Altieri, in Rome.
The conference is part of the photographic exhibition Out of Frame: Rethinking Visual Narratives of Migration in Europe, on display at Villa Altieri from 26 May to 26 June 2023.
The central question of the meeting is how to get out of the unacceptable alternative between the invisibilisation of migrants in the media and the reproduction of a pietistic-victimistic frame. We will discuss the pitfalls of the most widespread representations and how migrants and migration can be narrated otherwise, in order to avoid silencing them or reducing them to passive and desperate subjects, and to try to limit the compassion fatigue that seems to be spreading among the public.
We will have a dialogue with representatives of different professions that contribute to constructing the public image of migrants: journalists, NGO press officers, visual practitioners and academic scholars.
