Emanuela Zuccalà wins the Luchetta Award
In the Reportage section, the winner is reporter, author, and director Emanuela Zuccalà , who directed a medium-length film for the independent European platform Open Ddb about female genital mutilation in Liberia: not only is it legal, but it is even supported by the government, and even practiced as an initiation into a secret women-only society called Sande, which is widespread in 11 of the African country’s 15 counties.
The award is dedicated to the memory of Marco Luchetta, Alessandro Ota, and Dario D’Angelo, who were killed in Mostar in 1994 during the Bosnian War while covering the stories of “nameless children”,born of ethnic rape or children of missing parents; and cameraman Miran Hrovatin, who was murdered in Mogadishu the same year, along with journalist Ilaria Alpi.
“It is an award for journalism that is both news and message, promoting the values of peace, support, solidarity, and respect for civil rights, which are the way out of the tragedies of yesterday and today”.
